CSEA Community Engagement

Families Advancing Racial Equality

CSEA’s Families Advancing Racial Equity (FARE) program will focus on increasing resources to engage Southeast Asian families in becoming advocates for their children’s education and creating a 15-member Southeast Asian Commission to advocate for Southeast Asian families. The Commission will focus on the development of cultural competency trainings for educators and social workers and will work to increase the Southeast Asian professional workforce in Rhode Island.

CSEA believes that it takes resources and system-level changes to achieve racial equity. Strong families are critical in creating strong communities.

In order to develop strong families, CSEA will implement innovative wrap-around programs including culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach, educational programs, and leadership seminars for both youth and adults.

Seat Belt Outreach and Awareness

Seat Belt Outreach and Awareness Program (SOAP) is a program funded by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). SOAP helps Southeast Asians in Rhode Island become more aware of the seat belt laws and the importance of wearing your seat belt. Outreach is conducted at all the major Southeast Asian events (i.e. Cambodian, Hmong, Laos, and Vietnamese New Years), local Southeast Asian markets and restaurants, and at Southeast Asian temples and churches in Rhode Island, utilizing promotional items and educational materials about seat belt safety.

"We arrived in America as refugees from Southeast Asia, with very little in our pockets, but plenty of hopes and dreams. We worked in the factories and other odd end jobs to support our families, slowly paving our way to become business owners, restaurateurs, and working professionals.

Many of us are rooted in two worlds: one, the green rice fields of our memories; the other, a new world, dense and urban.  Over time, our children have adapted and grown, now graduating high school and college with hopes and dreams to give back to their community. As the future of Southeast Asians in Rhode Island, we are committed to reaching out to our community, especially those who have not established a sure footing.

Having come so far, we now set our sights on going further. We are proud to be celebrating the heritage, the rich culture, and the evolution of Southeast Asians in Rhode Island--and in America."
